Tom Holland says production start date on Spider-Man 3 is still unclear
In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, when asked about Spider-Man 3’s expected production start date in July, MCU star Tom Holland has revealed that he’s still not sure if they would be able to begin filming on the planned date or if production would also get delayed just like what happened to Sony’s long-awaited film adaptation of Uncharted. “I’m not too sure,” Holland said. “I was in Berlin, making a film called ‘Uncharted ‘with Mark Wahlberg. We were all ready to go, we went to set for day one of shooting, and then we got shut down and we got sent home. So whether we shoot that movie first or we shoot ‘Spider-Man’ first, I’m not clear.”
However, despite the uncertainty with the production start of Spider-Man 3 and Uncharted, he assures that both high-profile films are still being made. “But both movies are being made and they’re both really strong and the scripts are fantastic, so whatever happens, happens.”
Given the world’s current situation right now, it is very likely that Spider-Man 3 might also change its 2021 release date as Marvel Studios had already made changes to its 2021 line-up and Sony Pictures has pushed back Venom 2’s release date from October 2020 to June 25, 2021.
Tom Holland will return for the film as the titular wall crawler, and it remains to be seen what villains he’ll go up against in the trilogy caper. Given the ending of Far From Home however, any number of his rogues gallery are likely eager for a fight. The third installment to the MCU’s Spider-Man films will also feature the return of Zendaya (Euphoria, Dune) as MJ. Holland’s Spider-Man is also set to appear in another Marvel Studios film per the new agreement.
The third Spider-Man film from Marvel Studios is set for a July 16, 2021 release, officially adding another addition to the already crowded Phase 4 release slate. The release date puts the film in direct competition with Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 7, which opens on July 23, 2021. Marvel’s The Eternals opens on February 12, 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opens on May 7, 2021 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens on November 5, 2021, making 2021 the first year we get FOUR MCU movies!
Sony’s upcoming Spidey slate includes the Venom sequel, starring Tom Hardy and directed by Andy Serkis, as well as Jared Leto’s in-the-can Morbius, a Kraven the Hunter film, and a spinoff featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat. Should these films interact with the MCU and Tom Holland, it remains to be seen, but the door seems open.
