Lloyd Harris’ giant-killing act continues at Madrid Open

South Africa’s top-seeded ATP Tour player, Lloyd Harris, continued his fine run of form in 2021 with a marathon victory in the opening round of the Madrid Open.

The 24-year-old Capetonian edged Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5) in a match which lasted two hours and 28 minutes.

Harris, who struggled with a lower back injury from the second set onwards, ultimately prevailed on his sixth match point.

Lloyd Harris entered the tournament ranked 54th in the world.

Harris will face Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the next round.

Meanwhile, neither Kevin Anderson nor Raven Klaasen are entered in this week’s clay-court tournament.
